Former England spinner Monty Panesar has made a shocking suggestion to Team India captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir ahead of the second Test in the ongoing series. Panesar stated that India should consider resting Jasprit Bumrah for the upcoming Test match against England.
Bumrah led India’s pace attack in the first Test against England. He delivered an impressive performance in the first innings, taking 5 wickets. However, he couldn’t replicate that success in the second innings. England chased down a target of 371, their second-highest successful run chase in Test history.
Following India’s loss in the first Test, there is speculation that Jasprit Bumrah might miss the second match at the historic Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham, starting Wednesday, July 2.
Monty Panesar stated that resting Bumrah could actually benefit India. He added that the bowling conditions at Edgbaston might favour a different attack and that such a tactical decision could improve the team’s overall performance.
"India should consider giving him a break, as the team's attack will be better suited to the conditions at Edgbaston. Making this strategic choice could enhance their performance on that crucial pitch!" Panesar told ANI.
Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep Bowl Extended Spells in Nets Ahead of Second Test
Jasprit Bumrah finished with match figures of 5/140 from 43.4 overs at an economy rate of 3.20. Meanwhile, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna combined to take 9 wickets for 482 runs across 92 overs.
Following the match, Gautam Gambhir reaffirmed the team’s decision to use Bumrah in only three of the five Tests in the series. While many, including fans and former cricketers, urged the team to play Bumrah in every match, Gambhir stated that the management is prioritizing his workload management.
Meanwhile, Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep bowled extended spells in the nets during a recent training session. Notably, Arshdeep focused on bowling with the old ball.
Jasprit Bumrah Returned to International Cricket in the First Test Against England After an Injury Layoff
Jasprit Bumrah made a return to international cricket in the first Test against England after missing several key assignments due to injury. He had been out of action since the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy and also missed the limited-overs home series against England and the 2025 Champions Trophy.
The fast bowler returned for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the latter stages of IPL 2025, where his team reached the playoffs. Bumrah picked up five wickets in the first innings, dismissing Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Chris Woakes, and Josh Tongue.
It was his 14th five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Bumrah equalled Kapil Dev’s record of 12 five-wicket hauls in away Tests, the joint-most by an Indian bowler in the longest format.
