San Fernando Valley Pride was loud and proud as the LGBTQ+ community in the San Fernando Valley along with family and friends took part in their third annual rally and march on Van Nuys Boulevard on Saturday in Van Nuys.
The event was hosted by state Sen. Caroline Menjivar in collaboration with Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath and Somos Familia Valle, a local LGBTQ+ community organization. “This year’s San Fernando Valley Pride is rooted in resistance against the attacks on our rights, the erasure of our history, the denial of our identities, and the withholding of our health care,” Menjivar said in a press release announcing the event.
She added, “LGBTQ+ people have always existed in every country, in every culture, and during every time in history, and we resist going back to a time when our existence was disregarded. As Californians, we will continue to advance the progress of justice and equality for our LGBTQ+ community and set an inescapable example for the entire country.”
The annual gathering began with a rally at 11 a.m. near the corner of Sherman Way and Van Nuys Boulevard followed by the march to the Van Nuys Civic Center at Sylvan Street, where the Pride Festival began at 1 p.m.
“Pride in the San Fernando Valley is not just a dream for few, it is the fierce, unyielding demand for dignity, equity, and love for all. We stand proud, fight hard, and never let anyone silence our voice or right to exist authentically,” said Kevin Al Perez, the co-founder and president of Somos Familia Valle, in the same press release.
