Syrian Islamic Council declares its dissolution

The Syrian Islamic Council announced its dissolution, along with all institutions affiliated with it, such as the Syrian Ifta Council and the Syrian Qurraa Council, in response to a request from the Syrian government.

A statement issued by the council on Saturday, June 28, stated that “the phase of the revolution against oppression and tyranny necessitated the establishment of various institutions to preserve the spark of the revolution and its compass, and the (Syrian Islamic Council) was one of those institutions.”

During its period of activity, the council formed a legitimate religious reference in public affairs, according to the statement, explaining that the dissolution of the council came in response to a request from the Syrian state, following the liberation of the country from the Assad regime.

Sheikh Osama al-Rifai headed the Syrian Islamic Council, and in November 2021, the council announced the unanimous election of Osama al-Rifai as the Grand Mufti of Syria, following the abolition of the previous regime’s position of Grand Mufti in areas under its control, according to a legislative decree issued on November 15, 2021.

At the end of last March, the Syrian transitional president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, issued a decision to form a Supreme Ifta Council in Syria, headed by Sheikh Osama al-Rifai.

According to the founding statement, the duties of the Ifta Council include issuing fatwas on current events and public issues, clarifying the Sharia ruling on matters presented to it, appointing inspectors and fatwa committees in the provinces, determining their responsibilities, supervising fatwa offices in the provinces, and providing the necessary support and advice.

    Since 2014

In mid-April 2014, about 40 associations and religious bodies gathered to announce the establishment of the Syrian Islamic Council, which at that time included several religious scholars, religious bodies, and scientific associations in Syria.

The announcement of the establishment of the council at that time aimed to “fill the void due to the absence of state institutions and their retreat in the liberated areas, to unify the word of scholars, preachers, and representatives of religious entities, to guide the Syrian people, find religious solutions to their problems and issues, and preserve the course of their identity and revolution.”

The council included 255 members belonging to its general body, representing “thousands” of preachers and scholars, as they represented many Islamic associations, religious councils, and a large number of them are located in northern Syria, while some others are in Turkey, and some are spread around the world, according to what was stated by the official spokesperson of the council, Muti al-Batin, in a previous interview with Enab Baladi.
