The Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) has announced plans to introduce its own T20 league during the 2025-26 season. GCA becomes the latest state body to launch its own T20 league, but the cricket association is still in the process of finalizing an appropriate time slot to host the tournament.
Global attention has recently turned toward these leagues. India’s domestic cricket is in a busy phase following the conclusion of the IPL, with several state associations hosting their own T20 leagues. These tournaments offer emerging players a chance to showcase their skills alongside established Indian stars.
State-run T20 leagues in India have grown significantly in popularity and structure. Many are broadcast on television and offer players both exposure and financial incentives.
The Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) was launched in 2016 with strong commercial interest, celebrity endorsements, and attractive player earnings despite its short duration. However, the TNPL has reportedly struggled to remain profitable, even in its 10th season in 2025.
However, these tournaments continue to be valuable platforms for emerging talent. Aniket Verma earned an IPL contract with Sunrisers Hyderabad after impressive performances in the Madhya Pradesh Premier League (MPL).
Gujarat Cricket Association Set to Launch New T20 League in 2025
According to Cricbuzz, the Gujarat Cricket Association is planning to introduce its own T20 league in the 2025-26 season. GCA secretary Anil Patel confirmed that the decision has been made, but details like the tournament window, format, and number of participating teams are not finalized.
"Anil Patel, the secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association, confirmed the decision to Cricbuzz. He also added that they are yet to find a suitable window for the tournament as well as finalise on the number of teams and other details," the report read.
State associations such as Delhi, Mumbai, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, and Saurashtra have organized leagues to showcase local talent.
Many of these competitions are scheduled to take place in June and July, following the conclusion of the IPL season in May, giving young cricketers a timely opportunity to catch the eye of top-level teams.
State League Franchise Owners Struggle to Recover Investments
State-level T20 leagues have become valuable scouting grounds for IPL franchises. However, most franchise owners involved in state leagues struggle to recover their investments, and this financial strain raises concerns about potential misconduct, including betting and match-fixing.
To address these risks, the BCCI has introduced guidelines for state associations. Each league is assigned an anti-corruption officer, and strict security protocols are required for player and official zones at match venues.
State leagues have limited earning potential. Without a sustainable financial model, these leagues risk collapse. Franchise owners invest in scouting and nurturing local players, hoping to develop future stars, but they receive little to no financial return for their efforts.
