Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) ended a long wait by clinching their maiden IPL title under the leadership of Rajat Patidar. In this article, we will look at all the IPL Captains of Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
All IPL Captains of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)
Former Indian captain Rahul Dravid was the first captain of Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the inaugural IPL season in 2008. Dravid led RCB in all 14 games that season, but wasn't able to make an impact, with the team winning only four games.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru's poor performance in the first season costed Dravid his captaincy as he was removed as the captain of the team for the next season in 2009, and the reins of the team were handed over to Anil Kumble.
If we talk about Dravid's performance as a batter, the right-hander scored 371 runs in 14 innings, which was considered a good enough performance back then.
Anil Kumble (2009-2010)
RCB's below-par performance in the 2008 IPL season tempted the management to bring a change in the team's captaincy, with Anil Kumble being handed over the responsibility to take the team to new heights
Kumble did so by guiding Royal Challengers Bengaluru to their first-ever IPL final against the Deccan Chargers. Although the team fell just short of winning the title in a low-scoring thriller, Kumble was able to repay the faith shown in him by the franchise.
Kumble also led from the front with the ball and was the second-highest wicket-taker in that particular season with 21 wickets registered against his name.
The former Indian captain led Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a total of 26 games and was able to win 15 of those.
It wasn't only Anil Kumble who captained Royal Challengers Bengaluru during the 2009 season, but Kevin Pietersen, who burst on the scene in 2005 and was the talk of the town since then, also led RCB in six games that season and was able to register a couple of wins.
Daniel Vettori (2011-2012)
Royal Challengers Bengaluru went in with a fresh approach in the 2011 season with a new captain, Daniel Vettori, at the helm. Vettori guided the team all the way to the final in his first season as captain of an IPL team
Vettori captained Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 22 games and had an impressive win/loss ratio of 1.200 with 12 wins and 10 losses
Virat Kohli's journey as IPL captain started when he stepped in for Vettori for a few games in 2011. It was in 2013 that Kohli was made the full-time captain of the team and did a fine job by guiding the team to three playoffs before stepping down
Kohli led RCB in 143 games and ended up winning 66 of those, while the team had to face defeat in 70 games under the leadership of Kohli, which includes a few games in 2023.
Shane Watson (2017)
Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson also led Royal Challengers Bengaluru in three games in IPL 2017 as Kohli missed the initial matches due to injury. Watson was able to win one out of the three matches he played as RCB's captain.
The former South African captain Faf du Plessis was picked up by RCB in the 2022 IPL auction, with the team in search of a captain after Kohli decided to step down as the captain of the team after the 2021 season.
Faf captained the team to two IPL playoffs in three seasons at the helm, which included a miraculous run in the 2024 edition.
Rajat Patidar (2025)
The newly appointed Royal Challengers Bengaluru captain Rajat Patidar did what many RCB fans were waiting for from the first season, i.e., guide the team to their first IPL title in his first season as captain.
Patidar appeared to be a tactically smart captain who set the tone for the team in the initial few matches and was also quite proactive in the field.
Jitesh Sharma (2025)
Jitesh Sharma stepped in to lead Royal Challengers Bengaluru when Patidar was nursing an injury and could only play as a batter. Although Jitesh was able to win one out of the two games he led the team in, but that one win sealed the top two spot for RCB.
