West Indies captain Roston Chase criticized third umpire Adrian Holdstock for controversial decisions throughout the first Test of the ongoing series against Australia in Barbados. Chase stated that several questionable calls went against his team, leaving the players disheartened despite giving their all.
Roston Chase was given out LBW for 44 runs despite a possible inside edge during the first innings. At the time of his dismissal, the West Indies were in a decent position at 139 for 5 in reply to Australia’s 180. However, Chase’s exit triggered a collapse, and the hosts managed only a narrow 10-run lead.
In the same innings, Shai Hope was ruled caught behind off Beau Webster despite replays showing that wicketkeeper Alex Carey may not have taken the catch cleanly. However, the third umpire ruled in favor of Australia, adding to West Indies’ frustrations.
Roston Chase called for accountability in umpiring after the first Test match. He said the team had done well to dismiss Australia for a modest total and were in a competitive position. However, he added that questionable decisions throughout the match went against the West Indies.
"This game is a frustrating one for me and for the team because we bowled out Australia for a relatively low score. We were very happy with that. But then there were so many questionable calls in the game and none of them went our way. I mean, as a player, you're out there, you're giving your all, you're fighting. And then nothing is going your way," Chase said after the first Test (via ESPN Cricinfo).
You See What Set Batters Can Do on the Wicket - Roston Chase
Chase said that it was frustrating to lose momentum after a solid partnership with Shai Hope. He felt that they were building a strong platform before controversial decisions disrupted their momentum.
"It could be heartbreaking. You see what set batters can do on the wicket. The wicket is one where once you get in, you can get runs, but the hardest part is to get in. Me and Shai Hope were going well and then, obviously, we had some questionable calls. That really set us back in terms of creating a big lead on the total that Australia set," he added.
It Seems Like Everyone Is Against You - Roston Chase
Roston Chase stated that everything was going against the West Indies. He said that repeated unfavorable decisions made the players feel disheartened and isolated. Chase also stated that umpires face no consequences for questionable or incorrect decisions.
"It's clear to see anyone would feel bad or feel hurt about those decisions. You're out there playing to win, giving it your all, and it seems like everyone is against you," Chase said.
"It's frustrating because as players, when we mess up, when we get out of line, we're penalised harshly. But the officials, nothing ever happens to them. They just have a wrong decision or questionable decision, and life just goes on," he added.
Head coach Daren Sammy took action by meeting with match referee Javagal Srinath after the second day. Sammy was critical of third umpire Adrian Holdstock, accusing him of showing bias against the West Indies with several of his decisions.
