An investigation was underway after a baby died in a fiery crash on Friday in LaPorte County, Indiana, sheriff’s deputies said.
The crash was reported at around 1:09 p.m. in the 11500 West block of County Road 400 North near Michigan City. Deputies with the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene and told the vehicle was engulfed in flames, and a child was inside.
Deputies weren’t able to safely reach the vehicle due to intense flames, officials said. Firefighters extinguished the blaze within several minutes. A 10-month-old baby died in the fire, the sheriff’s office said.
It wasn’t immediately clear if anyone else was injured in the collision.
The crash remained under investigation by sheriff’s detectives late Friday evening.
