Are you excited about hosting the BBC’s Euro 2025 coverage?
I can’t believe it’s three summers since we were celebrating the Lionesses’ win because it feels like we’re still basking in the glow of that trophy. I love major tournaments. You get so engrossed in what you’re doing.
Does Euro 2025 feel different from previous tournaments?
When Radio 4 [on the Today programme] is discussing the selection for the Euros in the morning, you know the sport has moved out of the cheerleader type of broadcasting of 15 to 20 years ago. You can just see that in the way that this Euros selection for Sarina Wiegman has been scrutinised. That’s the way the team want it.
What do you think the mood is like in the England camp?
Things like [recent retirements] can be an opportunity for a group to galvanise and regroup. Now they’re probably feeling: “Take the attention away, let us focus on the build-up and then let’s go into this and bring it back home.”
And what’s the mood like in the Wales camp?
When it’s your first experience of a major tournament, you have to believe. They’ve got to believe they have an opportunity to show a generation of young girls and boys in Wales what is possible.
What’s your England prediction?
I think they can get to the final, but it’s more possible for them to get to the final if they don’t finish top of the group. But once you start playing that game, you’re in a dicey situation.
What about Wales?
Wales can really affect the outcome of this group. They’ve got to go out and attack, rather than try to preserve goalless scoresheets. They’ve got to go for it.
