Botafogo are unbeaten in their last five competitive matches against Palmeiras (W3 D2).Palmeiras and Botafogo resume their intense rivalry on one of football’s biggest stages as they meet in the last 16 at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
This has been one of Brazilian football’s defining contests in recent years. The two clubs fought fiercely for the Brasileirão Serie A title in 2024, and faced off in the round of 16 of last year’s Copa Libertadores as Botafogo triumphed 4-3 on aggregate after a thrilling two-legged encounter. Botafogo striker and Nottingham Forest target Igor Jesus found the net in both legs of that tie.
They most recently met in the league in the opening game of the 2025 campaign, sharing a 0-0 draw that saw 26 shots and a cumulative expected goals of 2.26 without a goal scored.
You have to go back almost two years (November 2023) to find the last time Palmeiras beat Botafogo, and they’re on a run of five games against their Brazilian rivals without a win.
Palmeiras qualified for the knockout stages as Group A winners, securing top spot on goal difference. They sealed first place on Matchday 3, fighting back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Inter Miami. After Luis Suárez put the MLS side 2-0 up, Palmeiras dominated the rest of the game, attempting the final 10 shots, six of which were on target, to earn the crucial point.
Raphael Veiga created the most chances of any player in Group A (8), despite the Brazilian not playing more than 45 minutes in any of his three matches (115 minutes in total).
Chelsea-bound teenager Estêvão led all Palmeiras players for take-ons attempted (12) and successful take-ons (6) in the group stage, with 11 of them coming in the opposition half, four more than any other Palmeiras player. He also had the most touches in the opposition’s box (18).
Botafogo, meanwhile, upset expectations in Group B, finishing as runners-up behind Paris Saint-Germain. Despite losing to Atlético Madrid, Botafogo’s victories over PSG and Seattle Sounders earned them six points and a place in the knockout stage.
