The hunt for serial arsonists terrorising the Pacific Northwest of America leads to an unexpected partnership and a high-stakes game of secrets and lies in Smoke.
Inspired by true events, it follows a troubled detective and an enigmatic fire investigator as they pursue the trails of the firestarters.
Created by Dennis Lehane, the writer behind Mystic River, Shutter Island and The Wire, it premiers on Apple TV+ this week. Taron Egerton and Jurnee Smollett lead the cast in a story with an incendiary twist.
What is Smoke about?
Set in the fictional town of Umberland, Smoke focuses on firefighter-turned-arson-investigator Dave Gudsen (Egerton), who is looking into the cases of two serial arsonists.
At the same time, he is writing a novel about his real-life experiences.
When Gudsen appears to be making no headway, hard-nosed police detective Michelle Calderone (Jurnee Smollett) joins the investigation. bringing with her a painful backstory.
As the arson investigator and police detective begrudgingly team up, their race to stop two arsonists ignites a twisted game of secrets and suspicions.
The show is loosely based on a story explored in the true-crime podcast Firebug, in which serial arsonist John Leonard Orr burnt down businesses in California, killing four people.
