Enab Baladi – Damascus
Several teams organizing paid board game events have spread throughout Damascus and its countryside. They prepare dedicated spaces for play, provide the games, and oversee the sessions. These events are attracting a younger demographic looking for entertainment and social interaction.
Each game consists of pieces that are placed, removed, or moved on its specific board. Each game has its own rules and may be based on strategy, luck, or a combination of both.
Organizing events and types of games
The supervising team consists of specialists in the gaming field, organizing participants into groups, with each group seated at one table, where the supervising team begins to explain the game’s rules.
The games vary between cooperative ones that require teamwork and competitive ones with only one winner. They include war games, racing, strategy, speed, planning and tactics, crime and mystery, construction and trade, and card games.
The styles of games differ; some rely solely on cards, others on a board, and some may require dice.
Game durations range from ten minutes to two hours, depending on the type of game and the number of participants.

Games for all ages
Rabih Abu Aslah, the founder of one of the board game teams, stated that these events meet people’s need for interaction away from screens. They also develop teamwork skills, planning, and the ability to set goals systematically.
Participants of all ages can join, from school and university students to the elderly, as the games are diverse and suitable for different groups. Events can be hosted in cafes, nursing homes, or even in the workplace as an initiative from companies for their employees.
Breaking monotony and building memories
Young people and university students are the most attracted to such events, as they wish to try new games, some of which remind them of childhood memories like Monopoly and chess.
Abu Aslah mentioned, “What we aspire to is not just playing for fun, but we seek what lies beyond entertainment.” Through these games, relationships are built, and social bonds strengthen. Although they are also available digitally on phones and computers, holding cards or game pieces offers a different, more authentic, and warm feeling.
“In this event, we don’t just play; we live a complete experience full of competition, fun, and interactive atmospheres. We gather as friends around one table and forget our worries, instead of spending time on our mobiles,” said Sidra (23 years old) about the board game event she participated in.
