Kevin Owens has revealed a chilling new update on his neck injury — and the terrifying moment doctors told him that just one wrong move in the ring could be fatal.
Speaking on Cody Rhodes’ What Do You Wanna Talk About? podcast, Owens gave an emotional and, at times, harrowing insight into the months he’s spent dealing with a serious spinal issue.
The former Universal Champion explained he’s been suffering since January, when he believes the trauma ‘really did it,’ although signs may have been building up before.
“We’re letting my spinal cord heal as much as we can on its own before we go in for the surgery,” Owens said. “How extensive the surgery will be depends on how my spinal cord looks when we go in there.”
The turning point came in April. After continuing to wrestle for months — including what the Canadian cheekily referred to as a “nice and easy ladder match where nothing crazy happened at all” — Owens finally had an MRI during the first week of April.
That’s when doctors delivered the bombshell news.
“They were like: ‘Oh, guess what? You can’t even get hit. Don’t even get hit, because you might die.’ So everything took a turn.”
The blunt diagnosis sent shockwaves through Owens’ world, and he’s been off TV since March 1’s Elimination Chamber.
“It’s been four months almost,” he said. “We’re waiting till mid-July to do the surgery. Hopefully it’s a normal neck fusion. It might not be. We don’t know.”
While Owens, who has made a career out of taking brutal punishment, had been symptom-free for most of that time — no pain, no tingling, nothing typical of a spinal cord injury — things took a sudden and frightening turn just days before the podcast was recorded.
“In the last week, for some reason, the symptoms all came in one shot,” Owens said. “Every symptom you’d expect me to have — the pain in the neck, the stuff going down the arms, the legs not really responding — it’s all been happening. So it’s been pretty brutal. Really, I can’t wait for the surgery.”
But this episode wasn’t just a medical update. It turned into one of the most heartfelt and openly emotional conversations fans are ever likely to hear between two of WWE’s most respected performers.
Owens had ‘stolen’ the title belt as part of their ongoing rivalryWWE Owens tried to refuse the title belt gift but Rhodes persistedYouTube/What Do You Wanna Talk About? At one point, the pair were moved to tears as they discussed what it means to be a father — and how their careers have become as much about inspiration as they are about legacy.
Near the end of the interview, Rhodes told Owens he had a gift for him as they discussed the prestigious and coveted ‘Winged Eagle’ WWE title belt.
It wasn’t just any replica. It was the very same belt the pair had fought over at Saturday Night’s Main Event — a bout that, in hindsight, was one of Owens’ last before doctors pulled him from the ring for an extended hiatus.
“This one’s yours, buddy,” Cody said, sliding the belt over.
Owens, visibly emotional, held it up to the camera — revealing Cody had signed it with just three words: I love you.
The gesture carried extra weight given their long history. Owens and Rhodes first crossed paths on the independent scene nearly two decades ago and have since clashed across multiple eras and promotions.
At Saturday Night’s Main Event, where they battled for that very Winged Eagle belt, Rhodes got the win.
Rhodes became tearful when discussing the impact of his family on his careerYouTube/What Do You Wanna Talk About? The American Nightmare remains a central figure on Raw despite, since, losing his title to John Cena.
But for Owens, the focus isn’t gold — it’s recovery.
He’ll undergo surgery, with the hope of that ‘standard’ neck fusion. The timeline is unclear, but if all goes well, a return to the ring is still possible.
Cody may have taken home the championship that night — but Owens is chasing something even bigger: a shot at getting back in the wrestling ring.
