After a frustrating 1-1 draw with Al Hilal in their first game at the Club World Cup, Real Madrid fans must have feared the worst when their team was reduced to 10 men early on against Pachuca last time out.

Raul Asencio was given his marching orders with just eight minutes on the clock, handing Madrid a numerical disadvantage for the remainder of the match.

More dropped points would have left Xabi Alonso’s side vulnerable to an astonishing early elimination from the tournament. Instead, Madrid steadied themselves and went on to win comfortably.

The scoreline was 3-1 in the end, but Pachuca’s goal in the 80th minute was a mere consolation. A much improved Madrid were belatedly off and running at the Club World Cup.

The hope for Madrid now is that they do not look back from here. There were obvious teething problems on display against Al Hilal, with Alonso still getting his ideas across to the squad he inherited from Carlo Ancelotti.

That could still be an issue later in the tournament, especially if Madrid were to come up against a strong side with settled management like Manchester City or Paris Saint-Germain.

Yet a sense of optimism has been restored to the Madrid camp in recent days. Kylian Mbappe is on his way back following a bout of illness which saw him lose around 5 kilograms. He might not start against Red Bull Salzburg, but he should be ready for the knockout rounds.

Assuming Madrid get there, of course. That is not yet guaranteed. Were they to lose to Red Bull Salzburg, Alonso’s side would be on their way through the departure gate if Al Hilal beat Pachuca as expected.

But Alonso liked what he saw against the Mexicans and the Madrid boss is no doubt starting to feel more positive about his team.

“When I saw the red, I knew it was going to be very tough,” Alonso said after the Pachuca game. “The context of our entire approach to the match had to change. Fortunately, the boys understood that very well.

“We played with a lot of maturity, intelligence, sacrifice and discipline to be able to work things out in the match, which was going to be a very long one for us. In the end, winning 3-1 with just ten men is fantastic.”

Salzburg meet Real Madrid as the Club World Cup group stage comes to an end.

Red Bull Salzburg are in a difficult position as we enter the final set of group games at the Club World Cup. 

They are second in the group ahead of this clash with Real Madrid, but a defeat here would see them drop down to third if Al Hilal beat Pachuca. 

And while a draw would be a good result in isolation, that would leave Salzburg in danger of missing out on the top two on goal difference.

Madrid look to be growing into the competition and it is hard to see the Austrian team being able to hang with them for 90 minutes.

Alonso’s side should win this one and we also anticipate them being in the lead at the interval.

Madrid will also want to put on an attacking showpiece as they warm up for the knockout stage of the competition. 

Goals are on the cards in this one. Just like Madrid’s meeting with Pachuca, there is a good chance we will see at least four in total.

Jude Bellingham was the star of the show when Real Madrid put Pachuca to the sword on matchday two.

The England international opened the scoring and was prominently involved in Madrid’s play thereafter. 

Bellingham has a knack for grabbing a game by the scruff of its neck and he will be aiming to do exactly that against Red Bull Salzburg.

The attacking midfielder can get his name on the scoresheet for the second game running in the early hours of Friday morning.
