Pioneering 90s Rocker, 58, Celebrates Milestone Anniversary of the Best Album Ever

When Liz Phair burst onto the music scene with her debut studio album Exile in Guyville in 1993, she quickly ascended to indie rock "it" girl status. Now, over 30 years after the critically-acclaimed record's release, the 58-year-old musician is celebrating its success...with a little help from fans.

Phair marked the groundbreaking album's 32nd anniversary in an Instagram post this week, sharing a pic of the album's iconic cover art (featuring a cropped photo of the singer-songwriter topless in a photo booth, taken by Nash Kato of Urge Overkill).

Unsurprisingly, the image triggered a flood of memories for her followers, who were quick to share what made Exile in Guyville so meaningful to them in the comments.

"'He’s just a hero, in a long line of heroes, looking for something attractive to say,'" one person wrote, quoting the song "Soap Star Joe."

"Ty for the poetry and vulnerability," the person added. "Such a part of my development and psyche!?"

"Mesmerizing has been my anthem for over 30 years!!! I love this album sooo much ❤️?❤️?," a second fan chimed in, with another admitting, "I wish I was 32 but I’m 52 lol I remember this coming out when I was 20 best album ever."

"Was constantly on rotation in my freshman year dorm room. A masterpiece of an album. ???" someone else gushed.

In a 2023 interview with The Cut, Phair looked back at the attention she received after Exile in Guyville, which she's said was written as a song-for-song reply to the Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main Street.

"It felt very overwhelming to go from being the observer to being the observed," she said, adding, "I think most people who get into performing want to be observed. They are almost dying for it. But I was the opposite."

"Not like, 'Oh, poor me, I became famous,' but it was so unexpected and I had not pre-pictured it," Phair continued. "I had dreamed about making a record that was like, 'You guys have made me listen to your stupid conversations about what good music is and what bad music is for the last 15 years. F--k you. Here’s good music.'I was so tired of boyfriends and guys and teachers lecturing me constantly about what I ought to learn from them that I just wanted to put something out that shut the conversation down."
