ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Coming off a heat wave in the Rochester area this week, it may be time to restock on sunscreen. Parents may be wondering whether there’s a difference between kids’ and adult sunscreen. We looked into it.
It can be tempting to reach for products with labels that look like they’ll be beneficial for your little one, like sunscreens with colorful labels that say “tear and sting free.” This first full week of summer, the sun’s rays have been particularly powerful. The UV index reached 10 on Tuesday, considered very high, with the potential for sunburns in just 20 minutes.
News10NBC’s Emily Putnam checked the ingredients on the back of a bottle of a popular sunscreen brand. The 6-ounce, 50 SPF kids spray formula and the adult version from the same brand have the same four active ingredients, but different amounts of each.
For example, the first ingredient listed – 3% for kids and 2.7% for adults. The inactive ingredients are where you’ll see more differences. Kids’ products tend to have milder ingredients, like less alcohol and more minerals. Experts say that if it’s 30 SPF or higher and you’re re-applying regularly throughout the day, you’re in good shape no matter your age.
Of course, it all depends on the brand. Some brands use all mineral or natural ingredients. But in most popular brands, the active ingredients are the same for kids and adults. Children’s formulas are just typically more concentrated.
