Thunderstorms are expected to hit parts of the UK before temperatures reach as high as 31°C over the weekend.
Britain is braced for another heatwave as temperatures of 29°C are forecast on Saturday, 30°C on Sunday and a high of 31°C on Monday, according to the Met Office.
A heatwave is declared if locations reach a particular threshold temperature for at least three consecutive days – that varies from 25°C across the north and west of the UK, to 28°C in parts of eastern England.
Wednesday is set to be “humid and very warm” in the south of England, bringing a threat of “heavy, possibly thundery showers” later in the day, according to the national weather service.
Forecaster Paul Gundersen said thunderstorms with “lightning, hail, and heavy rain” may strike the South East of England overnight before clearing on Thursday.
He continued: “Elsewhere through Thursday, rain will move eastwards across the UK, clearing to showers, with some sunny spells breaking through at times.
“Friday will start dry in the east, with rain moving in from the west, becoming showery later.”
Mr Gundersen said that many parts of the UK will stay dry on Saturday. A patch of rain will move south east and ease.
“Variable cloud and showers” are expected on Sunday in the north, with “patchy rain and drizzle” in the west, but otherwise it will be dry with sunny spells, he added.
Highs of 30°C are expected in parts of the south over the weekend, which would make the UK hotter than Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, according to forecasters.
Oli Claydon, spokesman for the Met Office, said Monday could see 30°C or even 31°C but the picture is still uncertain.
He said a short-lived localised heatwave is possible in the South East of England as the mercury goes up this weekend.
An official UK heatwave is recorded when areas reach a certain maximum temperature for three consecutive days, with thresholds varying from 25°C to 28°C in different parts of the UK.
