Lewis Hamilton knew exactly who needed to feature in the brand-new F1 movie to make sure it was authentic.
The film, which has been officially released on June 25, stars Brad Pitt as an F1 driver returning to the sport after a serious accident.
It, of course, features a whole lot of racing and almost the entirety of the real-life grid are included in the movie.
F1 fans will want to watch a film on their beloved sport that appears to be realistic to what the races are actually like.
And that is a feeling that Lewis Hamilton echoed as he helped provide an insight into how the film should be made.
The F1 icon, who is an executive producer on the new movie, had one simple request that he knew would make all the difference.
He asked the director and producer of the movie to have iconic commentators David ‘Crofty’ Croft and Martin Brundle covering the racing action throughout.
Croft and Brundle have commentated on Sky Sports’ F1 coverage together since 2012, becoming the voices of the sport.
Hamilton felt as if that meant they had to feature in the movie, to have it appear as authentic as possible to fans.
And it was a request that was listened to, with Croft thanking the Ferrari superstar for getting him into the film.
“If it wasn’t for Lewis, I wouldn’t be in the film,” he said to Sky Sports when speaking on the red carpet at the premiere.
“He sat down with Jerry Bruckheimer (producer) and Joe Kosinski (director) and said: ‘Look, if you want to make it authentic in terms of the commentary, don’t get an actor, get Crofty and Martin to do it because they’re the voice.’
Croft (right) is the voice of F1, working alongside BrundleGetty Brundle is adored by F1 fans for his grid walks and co-commentaryGetty“And so I’m really glad to say that the producers agreed with Lewis on that and I thanked him for it a couple of years ago.
“He said well you don’t have to thank me and I said no, you said a really nice thing and I really appreciate it.”
Hamilton played a huge part in the creation of the F1 movie, with leading actor Pitt paying tribute to him too.
Also speaking at the premiere earlier this week, the Hollywood star revealed the impact the British icon had on filming.
He said: “We couldn’t have done it without him, literally.
“I think when Joe [Kosinski] first had the idea, he knew that we had to get an elder statesman of the sport to help us, to set the parameters and to help us introduce this into the F1 world.
Pitt, who plays main character Sonny Hayes, hailed Hamilton’s impactGetty“He played such a big part in the script, to even post and putting it all together. We couldn’t have done it without him.”
Pitt also told talkSPORT: “He’s so kind, he got in the car with me…it’s got to be so frustrating for him, but he’s so kind and so giving from the beginning to the end of the film.”
Crofty and Brundle feature in the movie because of Hamilton’s request, and if there goes on to a sequel, more commentators could be introduced.
Someone who may want to feature in a potential second film is F1TV and Channel 4 commentator Alex Jacques, whose coverage competes with the Sky Sports duo.
He was asked whether he’d be up for having a part during an interview with talkSPORT.com in May.
But Jacques didn’t seem too interested in entering the film world, saying: “I am very, very happy with the job I’ve got. I am very happy with that.
“We’ve been talking about what the F1 movie is going to do and who it’s going to reach. My hope with the F1 movie is that it’s going to put Formula One in front of people who don’t yet know about Formula One and that we’re going to get another wave of new fans as a result.
“We saw what Drive to Survive did. We saw the expanded digital content, making the content more available online in the last decade.
“Hopefully, the movie is great. I mean, it looks amazing. All the rushes that we’ve seen look incredible. Hopefully, it’s a classic because the director, the job he did with Top Gun 2 was absolutely outstanding.
“So if it’s like that, hopefully a whole new wave of fans will find F1.”
