Red Bull’s rising star Lindblad completes first full F1 test

Red Bull junior Arvid Lindblad took another significant step towards a Formula 1 future on Monday, as he completed a full testing programme at Imola behind the wheel of a Racing Bulls 2023-spec car.

The highly-rated prospect, who recently earned his F1 superlicence, showcased his potential in a camouflaged car previously raced by the team under the AlphaTauri banner, splitting testing duties with fellow Red Bull junior Ayumu Iwasa at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix venue.

For Lindblad, it marked his first proper F1 test following an initial but filming day at the same venue in February. Unlike that restricted promotional run, this outing allowed the British teenager to explore the limits of the car more freely, an opportunity he embraced despite a couple of minor hiccups.

The programme – run under Formula 1’s Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) rules – unfolded largely to plan, although Lindblad encountered two spins at the Variante Alta chicane, according to a report from Autosport.com.

Nevertheless, the session is being seen as a vital milestone in his development as Red Bull begins to integrate him more seriously into its F1 plans.

    Fast-Tracking a Future F1 Career

Lindblad’s rise through the ranks has been rapid. After a strong rookie season in FIA Formula 3, the Red Bull junior has already claimed two race victories in Formula 2 this year – a sprint race win in Jeddah and a commanding feature race triumph in Barcelona.

He currently sits third in the F2 championship standings, behind McLaren junior Alex Dunne and Dutch driver Richard Verschoor.

Red Bull’s long-term faith in Lindblad is evident. The team recently secured a special dispensation from the FIA to allow him to participate in F1 activities before reaching the minimum age of 18, a rare exception to superlicence rules.

That decision paved the way for Monday’s test, which serves as both a developmental step and a precursor to his highly anticipated debut in a Grand Prix weekend. Lindblad is slated to take part in Free Practice 1 (FP1) sessions later this season — potentially with either Racing Bulls team or Red Bull Racing.

With Racing Bulls still needing to fill two of its four required rookie FP1 sessions this year – and Red Bull also rotating its young drivers — Lindblad is expected to feature prominently in the second half of the season. Isack Hadjar has already covered Racing Bulls' first two FP1 slots, while Iwasa has completed one for Red Bull.

The Imola test not only offered Lindblad invaluable seat time in Formula 1 machinery but also underlined Red Bull’s commitment to grooming its next generation of talent.

If the trajectory continues, it may not be long before the teenage young gun follows in the footsteps of fellow academy graduates like Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen – and makes the leap from promising prospect to full-time F1 driver.
