Rock Legend, 74, Reveals Emergency Health Issue Out on Tour

The last place you'd really want to experience a medical emergency is overseas. You're in a foreign country, you may not be fluent in the local language, and you're worried about your health. And you especially don't want to have one if you're on tour with the legendary Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band.

But such was the case for Steven Van Zandt, the Sopranos actor, radio host, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and Springsteen's longtime friend and bandmate. In a message posted on June 23, the 74-year-old Van Zandt revealed he was in the Spanish city of San Sebastian when he started to feel "a sharp pain in my stomach."

"Thought it was food poisoning, turned out to be appendicitis," wrote Van Zandt, with the type of aplomb you'd expect from one of New Jersey's favorite sons. Little Stevie said he "got lucky with an exceptional hospital [here] in San Sebastian," and his operation was "a complete success."

Springsteen and the E Street Band are scheduled to play the Reale Arena in San Sebastian tonight (June 24). However, Van Zandt indicated that he will miss that show—as well as the June 27 concert at Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany—as he recovers from the emergency surgery.

"I'm hoping to get back on stage for at least one of the shows in Milan," he wrote, indicating the June 30 and July 3 shows at San Siro Stadium. "Thank you for all the good vibes," he added. "See you soon."

Fans, friends and supporters sent their support to Van Zandt. Slim Jim Phantom, formerly of The Stray Cats, wrote, "Holy Mackerel, Stevie! Rest up and heal up. Much love."

Olivia Harrison, producer, author and widow of George Harrison, added, "Take your time and heal. We know you are a powerhouse, but please, don't jump back on stage yet. We love you."

It's been a busy year for "The Boss." Springsteen released the Tracks II: The Lost Tapes box set, teased new music is coming, had the trailer for his biopic drop, and he kicked off this tour. But, despite all this, Springsteen's kids couldn't care less.
