Dementia Together has partnered with Banner Health to deliver dementia education in northern Colorado.
The two entities have collaborated to bring the SPECAL — or Specialized Early Care for Alzheimer’s — method to Banner’s hospitals and clinics in northern Colorado and Wyoming, according to a Dementia Together news release.
The SPECAL method is an evidence-based, person-centered model that provides care teams access to dementia education, equipping them with “counterintuitive strategies for enhancing the well-being of individuals living with dementia,” the release said.
Cyndy Luzinski, executive director of Dementia Together, an organization based in northern Colorado, said in the release that Banner Health commits to improving lives by serving patients and their families with “compassion, dignity and expertise.”
“The mission of Banner Health ‘to make healthcare easier so life can be better’ aligns with our vision to make living well with dementia the expectation, not the exception,” Luzinski said.
Emily Demmler, a certified SPECAL practitioner and Banner Health team member, helped make the partnership possible. Demmler facilitates SPECAL-informed care practices for patients and staff.
Shawnae Blandford, a Banner employee and SPECAL coach, will implement the method within the hospital setting, the release said.
“Dementia Together has allowed Banner clinicians to elevate their care for dementia patients,” Banner Health Chief Operating Officer Kari Holman said in the release. “Using the SPECAL method specifically designed for dementia patients, we have been able to connect with patients and families to facilitate positive, dignified interactions. Our team feels more empowered to know they are meeting patients where they are.”
