(KRON) — The U.S. Coast Guard has called off its search for two people who remain missing after a boat capsized at Lake Tahoe Saturday night, killing six and injuring two more.
“The Coast Guard suspended its search at 10:55 a.m., Sunday, pending further developments, for two missing people in the vicinity of D.L. Bliss State Park at Lake Tahoe after their boat capsized Saturday afternoon,” the U.S. Coast Guard stated.
The boat capsized around 3 p.m. during a sudden storm, which rocked boats with unexpected 6 to 8-foot waves. Ten people were aboard the boat when it capsized a few miles west of the Nevada border.
The USCG and assisting agencies searched more than 390 square miles for a total of 12 hours in an effort to find the two missing boaters. As of Sunday evening, officials have not released the names of the missing people or those killed in the tragedy.
USCG search-and-rescue-mission coordinator Cmdr. David Herndon issued a statement following Sunday's search.
“Suspending a search is always a difficult decision to make and weighs heavily on each Coast Guard member involved,” Herndon said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those involved in the boat capsize.”
