ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Sunday morning, Reconnect Rochester began installing the first set of seasonal curb extension murals as part of their Downtown Smart Streets initiative. The program combines traffic-calming infrastructure with public art to enhance street safety and vibrancy amid growing concerns over pedestrian safety.
“So what you see behind me right now is, we’ve got a group of wonderful volunteers led by our artist Francesca Diaz, who are painting, you know, musical instruments, you trumpets, saxophones, onto the curb extension murals to pay homage to the spirit of jazz, you know, with Eastman Theater right over here,” said Project Manager Lourdes Sharpe.
The murals are being completed just in time for Jazz Fest, with crosswalks transformed into piano keys.
