LSU still won Game 1 in a 1-0 College World Series classic to take a similar 1-0 lead over Coastal Carolina in the best-of-3 Championship Series on Saturday night in Omaha.
But if the Tigers hadn’t prevailed thanks to Kade Anderson’s 130-pitch gem and moved within a victory of their 2nd national title in 3 years, then what happened to start the bottom of the 7th inning might have been talked about for years.
It still might be, despite LSU winning anyway.
Second baseman Daniel Dickinson was leading off that LSU bottom of the 7th, looking to get on base and give the Tigers a little bit of breathing room. LSU scored the only run of the game to that point way back in the first inning, and in a situation like Saturday’s, with everything on the line and the score so close, every baserunner was huge. Dickinson thought he was going to give the Tigers a leadoff runner when he was hit by a pitch.
However, following a replay review, umpires instead ruled that Dickinson leaned into the pitch, meaning it was a strike. There were already 2 strikes on Dickinson, so instead of standing on first base and giving LSU a jolt to start the frame in a 1-0 contest, Dickinson was heading back to the dugout as a strikeout victim.
Officially, Dickinson “struck out swinging” in the game’s play-by-play listing, even though he never swung the bat.
Here is the video of the controversial play and ruling:

— SEC Unfiltered (@SECUnfiltered) June 22, 2025Again, a lot of fans in Omaha and viewers around the country might forget about this when remembering what a classic performance Anderson turned in. But if the game had gone differently for LSU, that surely wouldn’t have been the case.
The drama continues on Sunday afternoon with Game 2, with LSU having a chance to win it all. The game is available on FuboTV with first pitch on ABC scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET from Omaha.
