On Saturday, June 21, the Syrian Ministry of Interior arrested Wassim al-Assad, a relative of the ousted president, Bashar al-Assad.
The Ministry of Interior stated in a press release on its official channels that, in a coordinated security operation, the General Intelligence Directorate, in collaboration with relevant authorities within the Ministry of Interior, was able to lure Wassim al-Assad.
Wassim al-Assad is considered one of the prominent drug traffickers and is involved in several crimes during the previous regime’s period.
This operation was executed by one of the Special Tasks Management teams affiliated with the Ministry of Interior, according to the statement.
The Ministry of Interior regarded this as a reflection of its commitment to combating crime and achieving justice.
Who is Wassim al-Assad?
Wassim Badi al-Assad was born in 1980 in Syria and is from the family of the ousted president, Bashar al-Assad.
During the years of the Syrian revolution, he faced accusations of involvement in drug manufacturing and trafficking networks, particularly for Captagon.
His activities in general trade and air, land, and sea transport became prominent. He held membership in the Syrian Joint Chamber of Commerce and was known for corruption cases and exploiting his family’s influence, which sparked widespread controversy regarding his role in the Syrian economy.
International sanctions
The European Union imposed sanctions on him, including freezing his assets and banning him from traveling, as part of international efforts to pressure the previous Syrian regime to hold individuals accountable for human rights violations and illegal activities.
Since the fall of the Assad regime, the new authority has shown seriousness in combating the production and trade of Captagon drugs, which has reassured Gulf countries and others regarding the issue. The discovery of Captagon manufacturing facilities continues, especially since the Syrian Ministry of Interior is working diligently to control and pursue traffickers and producers, seize and destroy large quantities of narcotic pills, and arrest promoters and traffickers.
The issue of Captagon drugs in Syria has contributed to the increase in economic sanctions, and with the regime’s demise, rights groups and international organizations have called for the lifting of these sanctions.
For its part, local and international organizations have called for the legal accountability of those involved in the Captagon issue, starting from the top of the previous regime, due to its societal, security, and health repercussions.
