County to construct improvements to Weld road 41, Colo. 52 intersection

Weld County will soon begin construction of new improvements to the intersection of Weld County Road 41 and Colo. 52, aiming to widen the road and repave specific stretches of Colo. 52.

In late May, the Weld County commissioners awarded a $3.99 million contract to AB Underground, LLC, to construct improvements at the intersection. These improvements will focus on widening the roadway north and south of Weld County Road 41 to provide wider shoulders and left-turn lanes in each direction at the intersection. Additionally, 600 feet of Colo. 52 will be milled and repaved.

To help offset the cost of this project, the county has received a federal grant of $953,445, which will be allocated toward this project. Additionally, the Colorado Department of Transportation will perform the work and design of the project. The department will also replace the stop signs at the intersection with a traffic signal without the need for additional utility relocations, earthwork or paving in early 2026.

“Maintaining our transportation system is always a high priority, but there is an expense to every project. Anytime we can receive a grant or support to offset a portion of that cost, we’re appreciative,” Weld County Commissioner Chair Perry Buck said in a county news release.

The improvements aim to make the heavily used intersection northwest of Hudson safer and more efficient by reducing the risk of broadside collisions. About 15,000 vehicles use the intersection daily, according to the county.

“This intersection sees a lot of use, and that’s only going to continue as the county grows,” Weld County Public Works Director Curtis Hall said in the release. “This project is important for both safety and efficiency moving forward and shows how Weld County and CDOT can work collaboratively to improve safety and efficiency.”

While no official start date has been set, the county expects construction to begin no earlier than the week of July 7. Once the start date is finalized, the timing of any associated closures will be announced on the county’s Facebook and X platforms.

Closures throughout the project are expected to primarily impact the north and south legs of Weld County Road 41, with the highway remaining open during this time. However, certain portions of work impacting the highway will be subject to varying forms of traffic control at different points in the project.
