The Kansas City Chiefs are gearing up for what could be Travis Kelce’s last ride.
Before he announced his intention to return for a 13th NFL season, the legendary tight end was said to be seriously deliberating retirement.
Kelce, 35, has already had a Hall of Fame career, after all.
He is a three-time Super Bowl winner who boasts a string of league and franchise records that will see him strut into Canton when the time is right.
That time, as we now know, is at least a year away.
Coming up short in the quest for a three-peat against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX has fuelled Kelce, and he wants one last ring with the Chiefs.
He is back for 2025, and if teammate Patrick Mahomes is to be believed, he is better than ever.
But long before there was talk of the legendary tight end walking away, speculation surrounded another key piece of the Kansas City puzzle — head coach Andy Reid.
Days after the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII back in February 2024, to secure back-to-back world titles, there was plenty buzz around ‘Big Red’.
Fellow coaching veterans Bill Belichick, Nick Saban and Pete Carroll had all left their posts in January of that year — and while two have since returned — there was speculation that Reid could follow.
Retirement rumors surrounded the 65-year-old in the build-up to that year’s Super Bowl, and after his Chiefs won it, some suggested he would ride off into the sunset.
Mahomes, though, never believed that chatter.
Mahomes was never taken by the retirement talk around his coach last yearGettyAmid the idea that Reid could walk away, Kansas City’s star quarterback argued that his coach was not one to think deeply about his life post-football.
“Other than spending time with his grandkids, he doesn’t do any of that stuff,” Mahomes said in February 2024.
“He’s all about football and cheeseburgers.”
Kelce, meanwhile, insisted that if Coach Reid was to call it a day, he would follow.
“I love coach Reid. Coach Reid knows how much I love to play for him, how much I love to be a product of his coaching career,” the tight end said, after a high-profile spat on the sidelines of Super Bowl LVIII.
“I’m not playing for anybody else but ‘Big Red’.
Kelce suggested he would never play for anyone but Coach Reid back in 2024Getty“If he calls it quits, I’m out there with him, man.”
Reid ultimately decided not to retire last offseason, and instead signed a contract extension worth around $100million to make him the highest paid coach in the NFL through 2029.
He returned with the hopes of securing a historic three-peat, but came up short last time around.
Thanks to that monster extension, there has been no talk of ‘Big Red’ retiring this summer.
Instead, he will be fully focused on helping Kelce secure the kind of success he craves to ensure he can walk away on his terms… whenever that might be.
But not everyone has the credentials to pull Kelce up — that’s Reid’s job.
“I always watch him, I always keep an eye on him,” Reid said of Kelce in minicamp this week.
“I know he’s getting older, he doesn’t know he’s getting older, but I can be the bad guy in some cases there if needed. But if I think it’s catching up to him a little bit, I’ll pull off and put him where he needs to be.
“But he hasn’t shown me any of that yet, he’s done really well.”
