Out-of-favor Team India batter Cheteshwar Pujara took a cheeky dig at former England skipper Michael Vaughan ahead of the first Test of the five-match series. Pujara, part of the commentary team for the series, asked Vaughan to sign a framed copy of an old tweet that grabbed the attention of fans.
England captain Ben Stokes opted to bowl first after winning the toss in Leeds on Friday, June 20. Sai Sudharsan made his debut for India, while Karun Nair returned to the team after eight years. Meanwhile, the home team fielded an inexperienced bowling attack due to injuries to their main bowlers.
Before the first Test in Leeds, Cheteshwar Pujara brought a framed copy of Michael Vaughan’s infamous 2020–21 tweet, in which the former England captain predicted a 4-0 whitewash for India in Australia. Vaughan’s prediction proved wrong, as India went on to win that series 2-1.
Pujara asked Vaughan to autograph the framed tweet, leaving the Englishman visibly amused and slightly embarrassed. The light-hearted moment was enjoyed by others in the studio too, including cricket legends Sunil Gavaskar and Harsha Bhogle, who couldn’t hold back their laughter.
“Told ya … India are going to get hammered in the Test Series … #AUSvIND #4-0,” Vaughan wrote.

— Rishabh Shukla (@rishabhshuklaP1) June 20, 2025Despite Mohammed Shami’s injury and captain Virat Kohli’s absence, India clinched a series victory in Australia. The team battled to earn a draw in Sydney before successfully chasing 328 runs on the final day in Brisbane.
Michael Vaughan Predicts England to Win the Ongoing India-England Test Series
Michael Vaughan has predicted that England will win the ongoing India-England Test series. However, Indian fans are hopeful that Shubman Gill and his team will prove him wrong, just as they did during the 2020-21 Australia tour.
Although England enjoy a home advantage, their bowling attack is inexperienced due to injuries sidelining Jofra Archer, Mark Wood, and Gus Atkinson.
India aim to end a long wait for a Test series win in England, having last triumphed 1-0 in 2007. In their previous tour in 2021-22, India performed strongly, with the series finishing in a 2-2 draw.
England, meanwhile, boast a strong home record under captain Ben Stokes, who has yet to lose a home Test series since taking charge in mid-2022.
Cheteshwar Pujara Not Included in India’s Test Squad for England Tour
Cheteshwar Pujara was excluded from India’s Test squad for the five-match series against England. He has played 103 Tests and scored 7,195 runs at an average of 43.60 with 19 centuries, but was not selected.
Many expected a recall following the recent retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, which opened up spots in the batting lineup. However, the team management chose not to include the veteran batter.
Pujara last represented India in the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia, where he scored 41 runs across both innings. India lost that match by 209 runs.
