The world watched Lizzo shrink — slowly, steadily, and publicly. As GLP-1 medications like Ozempic exploded across Hollywood, fans started speculating that the 37-year-old pop star was on them, too. Now, she’s setting the record straight.
On the Thursday, June 19 episode of the Just Trish podcast, Lizzo opened up about the real reason behind her recent weight changes. And yes, she admitted she tried the shots.
“I tried everything,” the Grammy winner told host Trisha Paytas. “Ozempic works because you eat less food… but if you can just do that on your own and get mind over matter, it’s the same thing.”
Lizzo — whose real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson — said the biggest shift came when she gave up veganism after nearly a decade.
“When I was vegan, I was consuming a lot of fake meats, I was eating a lot of bread, I was eating a lot of rice, and I had to eat a lot of it to stay full,” the “Truth Hurts” singer explained. “I was consuming like 3,000 – 5,000 calories a day.”
During a trip to Japan, Lizzo decided to reintroduce animal protein. “My body was so happy,” she said. “My body was like, ‘more, more please.’ And I was like, ‘OK, this is what my body likes.’”

— No Jumper (@nojumper) April 18, 2025The self-love advocate now eats whole foods like chicken, beef, and fish. “I was actually full and not expanding my stomach by putting a lot of fake things in there that wasn’t actually filling me up,” she said.
As for people who do stick with Ozempic? Lizzo said the judgment needs to stop.
“It’s not easy, I don’t think it’s easy,” she revealed. “It’s a drug to help somebody with something they’re struggling with. I think people — it’s their way of being fat phobic when you’re telling someone they’re cheating.”
This isn’t the first time the award-winning musician has addressed the Ozempic rumors. Back in September 2024, she posted a cheeky Instagram video with the caption: “When you finally get Ozempic allegations after 5 months of weight training and calorie deficit.”

— Oli London (@OliLondonTV) September 23, 2024Lizzo also opened up on TikTok Live in April 2025 about one surprising change that made a huge impact: cutting out her Starbucks habit. She revealed that she used to drink “two or three” large coffee drinks a day and estimated she was consuming around 1,200 calories from them alone. That realization led her to drop the coffee giant and eventually, coffee altogether.
“Everybody’s body is different,” the classically trained flutist said. “Find out what works for you.”
