Manjrekar questions Ravindra Jadeja’s impact against England, suggests bold spin move for Gill

Ravindra Jadeja’s place in India’s Test XI might seem non-negotiable, especially with his all-round value and experience. He has developed himself into a superb batter, doing India a massive favour, especially away from home.

However, former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar has introduced a bold, contrarian view ahead of the England series. Speaking on ESPNcricinfo, Manjrekar suggested that Jadeja might struggle to be effective against England’s attacking lineup, just like he did during the home series in 2024.

“Jadeja’s ineffectiveness is going to create problems. Ineffectiveness against the English batters, in the way they play him and played him in India,” Manjrekar remarked, referencing Jadeja’s 19 wickets across eight innings in that series, which was a solid return but often achieved under pressure from England’s counterattacking approach.

In England, Jadeja is yet to dominate as an all-rounder. He’s played 12 Tests but has 27 wickets at an ordinary average of 43.48. He did hit a superb ton but the overall average is less than 30 in the UK.

Kuldeep Yadav a tempting option for Gill’s India

While the idea of playing Kuldeep Yadav in England might sound far-fetched to many for the first Test, Manjrekar believes new head coach Gautam Gambhir’s unorthodox mindset could open the door for a two-spinner strategy.

“So, you might just feel that you need some more spin support, but it’s unimaginable, in England, first Test, to go with Kuldeep Yadav. But Kuldeep is such a tempting option,” he said, noting that the wrist-spinner’s ability to turn the ball on any surface offers a unique threat.

Jadeja’s batting at No. 7 does add balance, but his bowling record in SENA countries can offer limitations. Jadeja, whose career bowling average is 24.14, goes up to 38.46 in SENA countries, and with England approaching attacking cricket, his bowling can be a target. Interestingly, Jadeja’s contribution with the ball has deteriorated massively in recent times. With the ball, Jadeja averages 47.60 in SENA countries since June 2021. He has played 11 Tests and has taken just 15 wickets at a strike rate of 105.2.
