Today was the first full day of competition at the 2026 U.S. Short Course World Championship Trials and it did not take long for the records to start falling. Van Mathias opted for the 100 breaststroke instead of the 50 freestyle on a packed Day 2 schedule and the move paid off to the tune of new American and U.S. Open records (55.48). Tyler Ray equaled Noe Ponti‘s 100 butterfly U.S. Open record with a 48.47, moving up to #1 in the world this year. And with big names like Gretchen Walsh and Kate Douglass in action multiple times tonight, it seems safe to assume we’ve only scratched the surface of the speed in Westmont, Illinois.
After a quick opening distance day that featured just two events, there are 12 finals hitting the water tonight: men’s 100 butterfly, women’s 50 backstroke, men’s 200 backstroke, women’s 200 breaststroke, men’s 100 breaststroke, women’s 400 freestyle, women’s 50 freestyle, men’s 50 freestyle, women’s 200 butterfly, men’s 400 freestyle, women’s 100 IM, and men’s 100 IM.
