HENRIETTA, N.Y. — Several towns in the Rochester area are cleaning up after flash flooding on Wednesday afternoon left some basements and yards full of water.
The Henrietta Fire District, which had to rescue several people during the flooding, has some warnings for communities as they clean up. Henrietta was among the most impacted towns.
If you need to run a gas pump to get water out of your basement, don’t put it next to a window. Officials tell us they responded to several calls where dangerous carbon monoxide-filled homes.
Henrietta fire crews say that, while the high water can seem fun, it can be filled with bacteria and often sewage. Also, mold can develop quickly on wet belongings after flooding.
For families with flooded basements or other damage, take pictures and contact your insurance company as soon as you can.
