TEXAS (KXAN) — The signage of the Bernie Beck Gate has once again changed as the former name of the Texas Army base in Killeen was reinstated.

Fort Hood (formerly Fort Cavazos) was renamed for the second time in two years in honor of Colonel Robert B. Hood for his heroism during World War I. It was previously named after Confederate General John Bell Hood.

President Donald Trump announced earlier this year that it was one of several whose names were being restored back to their previous names, and the U.S. Army has taken action to change the names of seven Army installations in honor of soldiers who served in conflicts ranging from the Civil War to the Battle of Mogadishu.

The installation is currently updating the online presence, including Facebook and the website, and will be updating physical signage and other materials.

In 2023, the fort's name was changed to honor General Richard Edward Cavazos, a native Texan, war hero and Medal of Honor recipient.

It was one of nine U.S. Army installations redesignated based on the Naming Commission’s recommendations to remove the names, symbols, displays, monuments and paraphernalia that honor or commemorate the Confederate States of America, according to the U.S. Army’s website.

“It’s a slap in the face,” a Cavazos family member told KXAN last week in regard to the redesignation.
