Sherri Shepherd is stepping into a new, and magical, role on Broadway this fall.
Announced on Tuesday, the former talk show host has landed the role of the Genie in Aladdin, the first woman to ever take up the part.
“I’ve taken my family, my nieces and nephews, to see this musical and I never dreamed that I would one day be a part of the ‘Aladdin’ family. So I am beyond thrilled,” she told The Associated Press.
Shepherd will be starring in the show from Oct. 6 to Jan. 3.
And although this isn’t her first time on Broadway — she was the evil Stepmother in Cinderella in 2014 — she told The AP that she’s not only taking voice lessons to prepare, but she’s tapping her theater friends for advice.
“I’m talking to my friends, Kristin Chenoweth; Steven Boyer, who was in Kimberly Akimbo Wayne Brady — anybody I know who has been on Broadway,” she said. “I am calling them up going, ‘Help me, help me, help me’ and getting a lot of advice.”
The show, which first opened in 2014, is a stage adaptation of the 1992 film with slight changes to the story — where the main character uses the magic lamp his grant wish of charming the princess — to adjust for an in-person theater experience. Original Broadway cast member James Monroe Iglehart played Genie when the show first opened and won the Tony for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.

Typically categorized as a children’s show, Shepherd noted the significance of how her being the first female to play the part could be an example for the show’s young audience.
“I want the children to see the possibilities,” she added. “I want the little girls to say, ‘Oh yeah. I know I used to dress as a princess, but I could be the Genie. I can make wishes come true. Maybe I could be president.’”
