Newborn giraffe calf at Seneca Park Zoo dies due to leg paralysis

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Seneca Park Zoo announced that a giraffe calf has died due to paralysis of the left rear leg.

According to the zoo, Kura, their four-year-old giraffe, delivered a calf early morning Tuesday.

They say giraffe calves are on their feet shortly after birth. This calf was monitored by animal care and animal health staff for hours and saw it was not able to stand. As a result, Zoo Animal Health decided to euthanize the calf.

Zoo Veterinarian Chris McKinney says they were able to see the calf was not able to stand on its own and determined the calf had nerve damage, which caused the paralysis.

“Because it was a nerve and not a musculoskeletal injury there was not a way to splint the leg, and the prognosis was fatal,” said McKinney. “In addition, the calf was underweight, which may indicate there were other issues as well.”

McKinney says nerve damage can be caused by positioning in the uterus or can occur during the birth process, but there is no way to confirm.
