The 2025 celebration of Juneteenth will take place on Thursday, June 19, alerting some county operations to formally recognize the holiday of Black independence and full freedom from slavery.
Here’s a list of what services will be altered throughout Orange County:
Orange County Government
All Orange County administrative offices will be closed on Thursday, June 19, in observance of the Juneteenth holiday.
Orange County Solid Waste Management will also be off on Thursday — which will affect the countywide curbside pickup schedule. With no recycling on Thursday, solid waste will collect those residents’ items on Friday, and Friday recycling will be collected on Saturday. Additionally, the waste and recycling centers and county-run landfills will be closed on June 19.
Orange County Library will also be closed on Thursday. Emergency services will still be available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. More details about the county’s recognition of the holiday can be found here.
Town of Chapel Hill
Beyond the town’s administrative offices, the Chapel Hill Public Library, the Hargraves Center, and the Teen Center will be closed. The Homestead Aquatic Center, Community Center and pool, Nate Davis Sr. Gymnasium, and A.D. Clark outdoor pool will be open from 10 a.m to 5 p.m.
Chapel Hill Transit will operate its Sunday service on for the holiday, but the NS and FCX routes will run on their regular weekday schedule. There will be no service from Chatham Park and Ride or Jones Ferry Park and Ride.
Residential trash pickup will not be affected by the holiday, according to the town. Instead of Thursday, commercial trash will be collected at the end of the week. Yard trimmings will also not be collected on Thursday, with no make-up day.
Town of Carrboro
All town offices and facilities for the Town of Carrboro will be closed on Thursday, June 19. Yard waste and loose leaf collection will be collected on Friday, and Friday’s collection will move to Monday, June 23. More details of Carrboro’s affected services can be found here.
Town of Hillsborough
Similar to its neighbors, Hillsborough’s town offices and facilities will be closed on Thursday. Garbage collection routes served on Thursday by the town will move to Friday. For more information, click here.
