With the official start of summer later this week, thoughts of school are about to get put on hold for a couple of months.
After a busy school year, many students have graduated and are looking forward to their next course in life. Meanwhile, other students will be returning to high school later this summer or venturing to high school as freshmen.
But it isn’t just students getting to take a rest. One individual who deserves a well-earned break after a busy school year is Patrick Henry High School Principal Sandra White.
Mission Times Courier had a chance recently to chat with White via email.
MTC: What was the student enrollment for the 2024-25 school year?
White: 2,429 students.
MTC: What do you see as some of the accomplishments at PHHS this school year?
White: We are super excited — for the second year in a row we received the first place award for the SDUSD Recycling Challenge, thanks to Lara Dickens and the Environmental Club. Our French teacher, Dr. Nedellec, was an honoree for the Seal of Biliteracy. We administered close to 2,000 AP exams this spring; we have some amazing students who not only enroll in AP classes but end the year taking the exam.
We were excited to join the girl’s soccer team in celebrating their state championship win and our badminton team was the 2025 CIF champions. Boys tennis was a CIF finalist; boys volleyball was league champions; boys golf placed third in CIF; we had two state qualifiers for girls’ diving.
Our robotics team, the Patribots, qualified for the World Championships. They ended their season being ranked 102 out of 3,690 in the world and 12 out of 290 in California.
MTC: Given the ever-changing world of technology, how has Patrick Henry worked to make sure students and staff have all the tech they need to be productive in the classroom?
White: We made some changes to the gym and cafetorium to update Wi-Fi access, ongoing updates with student Chromebooks and staff computers through the district. All classrooms had their promethium boards updated to a box light display.
MTC: For freshmen coming to Patrick Henry next school year, what advice do you have for them and what can they look forward to as Patriots?
White: To our incoming ninth graders: Welcome to Patrick Henry High School — a place where you are seen, valued, welcomed, and heard. Here, we care just as much about who you are as we do about what you can do. Whether you’re a math whiz, a future artist, a quiet leader, or someone still figuring it all out — you belong here.
Starting high school can feel overwhelming. You might be asking, “Where do I sit? Will I get lost? Why does everyone look like they’re 25?” Take a breath — you’re not alone. Every freshman wonders the same thing. But what you’ll find is that support is all around you. Your teachers, counselors, staff, and yes — your principal (that’s me!) — are here to guide you every step of the way.
So, bring your energy, your ideas, your voice — and maybe a good alarm clock because the first period waits for no one! We cannot wait to see you grow into the amazing Patriots you’re meant to be. This is your high school, and we’re so glad you’re here.
Welcome to PHHS!
