ALBANY, N.Y. — At least six bills are awaiting signature from Gov. Kathy Hochul after passing in both chambers of the New York State Legislature.
Here’s a look at the bills that passed in recent sessions of the State Senate and Assembly in Albany and News10NBC’s coverage:
Limited immunity for sex trafficking victims
A bill passed on Tuesday would give sex trafficking victims limited immunity in New York State. It grants conditional immunity to people who have been trafficked or who have witnessed trafficking.
The bill aims to allow victims or sex workers to work with law enforcement agencies without fear of prosecution. It also allows victims to seek medical help and report abuse.
Time off for troopers after traumatic experiences
The legislature passed a bill that would give New York State troopers time off after traumatic experiences on the job.
The “State Trooper Mental Health Bill,” would give troopers at least 20 days of paid leave after the trooper causes someone’s death or serious injury. Troopers who were involved in a critical incident but weren’t the direct cause of harm would get 15 days of paid leave. This time would be for troopers to process the trauma without having to take vacation time or unpaid time off.
Bill to end free gas hookups for new homeowners
The Assembly on Monday joined the State Senate in approving a bill that removes a 40-year-old rule that lets homeowners get free gas hookups if they’re within 100 feet of a gas line.
According to our Buffalo NBC affiliate, Hochul has until the end of the year to sign or veto the bill. One of the bill’s sponsors says the bill would save consumers $200 million a year. Opponents of the bill say it is unfair, pointing out that Western New York relies on gas more than other parts of the state.
Two Bills to regulate artificial intelligence
Two bills that passed the legislature aim at regulating artificial intelligence in the state. The RAISE Act would require big AI companies, such as OpenAI or DeepSeek, to come up with, publish, and follow their own AI safety and security plans.
Another bill would require state agencies to regularly report to the governor and the legislature about how they use AI for decision-making. News10NBC looked into a study on whether some AI is learning to escape human control.
Medical Aid in Dying Act
The State Senate passed a bill that would allow doctors to prescribe a pill to end the life of a person with a terminal illness. The bill, known as the Medical Aid in Dying Act, has been around for a decade but has never gotten this far.
It passed the New York State Assembly on April 29 and is awaiting Hochul’s signature. News10NBC has covered the bill extensively, including speaking to a Rochester woman whose brother opted for aid in dying in Washington State, where it’s already legal. See our coverage here.
