Former Australian Test cricketer Will Pucovski has launched a legal claim against Brighton Grammar School over the alleged mishandling of a head injury he suffered in 2014, as per Code Sports. Pucovski played only 1 Test for Australia in his career. The batter made his debut for Australia against India in Sydney in January 2021. Will Pucovski suffered a serious head injury during a football training session at Brighton Grammar School in 2014. He was 16 when a teammate’s knee struck his temple after a sling tackle during a wrestling drill.
Pucovski was unconscious but allegedly returned to training minutes later without receiving appropriate medical care. His condition worsened the next day when he developed blurred vision during a gym session. He had more severe headaches and sickness, and his parents took him to the hospital 5 or 6 days later.
His lawyers allege that the school breached its duty of care by allowing him to continue training after the concussion. The Australian Sports Commission recommends 14 symptom-free days before a concussed adolescent returns to contact training.
Pucovski’s lawyers also highlighted the risk of second-impact syndrome, which can cause brain swelling and death. His repeated brain injuries have also raised concerns about chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Will Pucovski recently recalled the incident at a Taverners function at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club. He said that the wrestling drill was designed to help players “toughen up”. Pucovski said that he “never felt the same” after the incident.
“I got sling tackled into ironically one of my best mate’s knees who was running the other way. I literally got walked to the sidelines. And then my only memory was the coach coming up to me and being like ‘Do you want to keep training?’ I am like ‘Yeah’. So I just went and trained for the rest of the day.”
“I got ‘foggy eyes’. I’m like ‘I can’t see’, thinking I was just tired or fatigued or something, which turned out to be from the concussion. The next couple of days I just started to feel more sick, the headaches got worse and worse. Five or six days later I started feeling really, really sick and mum and dad took me to hospital. The mental health challenges started pretty quickly.”
Will Pucovski’s Concussions End Promising Australia Career
Will Pucovski made his Sheffield Shield debut for Victoria in 2016-17 and quickly emerged as one of Australia’s top young batting prospects. He scored 255* and 202 in consecutive innings during the 2020-21 season before making his Test debut against India in January 2021.
Pucovski had already suffered 9 concussions before his Test debut. He missed 6 months with a shoulder injury after his Test debut and took a break from cricket in October 2022 because of concussion and mental health issues. He returned a year later but suffered further head injuries in January and March 2024.
An independent medical panel later advised him to retire. He retired from professional cricket in April 2025 at 27 after suffering at least 13 documented concussions. He has since remained involved in cricket as a Channel 7 broadcaster and analyst and as the senior coach of the Melbourne Cricket Club.
