As part of the state’s 2025 to 2026 budget, many New Yorkers will get one-time distributions worth up to $400 from a $2 billion fund.

An announcement from Governor Kathy Hochul regarding the money given back to over eight million people was detailed last month, but the exact timeline of when checks would be sent remained unclear.

Now, officials have determined that mailing to qualifying residents will start in “mid-October of 2025,” per a page on the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance website.

It was noted that the “large volume of checks” would be sent over several weeks, meaning that some eligible taxpayers would likely get them before others.

Officials added that a delivery schedule could not be provided.

Department of Taxation and Finance staff also will not be able to offer additional information on check status to residents.

Qualifying residents were also urged to watch out for and not throw away mail sent to them from the department with its listed Albany address.

An image of what the check will look likely exactly is viewable on the page for the inflation refund checks.

    MEET THE CRITERIA

While New Yorkers didn’t have to apply for the money, they would automatically be eligible if they meet two criteria.

First, they must’ve filed Form IT-201, a New York State Resident Income Tax Return for at least the 2023 tax year.

Additionally, they must’ve not been claimed as a dependent on any other taxpayer’s return.

How much money is in their check will then depend on their filing status and adjusted gross income (AGI).

For example, those who are single filers that made $75,000 or less in the 2023 tax year would get a refund of $200.

Single filers who made between $75,000 and $150,000 would get $150.

It’s slightly different for qualified surviving spouse, as they still get checks worth $300 if they meet the other criteria and don’t bring an an income over $300,000.
