Final hours for Americans who own refrigerators from three brands to submit claim to score $300 from ‘defect’ settlement

AMERICANS have just hours left to claim up to $300 from a massive settlement regarding defective refrigerators.

The home appliance manufacturer Whirlpool agreed to a settlement that claims its refrigerators are defective, allowing certain customers to receive a substantial payout.

Claimants must act quickly, as they have until the end of the day on June 18 to file a claim.

The settlement comes after the company, which sells its products under three different brands, discovered that the refrigerators can develop frost build-up that interferes with cooling.

Customers who own a Whirlpool, KitchenAid, or Maytag refrigerator are all eligible to apply for the claim, as Whirlpool Corporation owns each of these brands.

To claim money from the settlement, Americans must own a refrigerator manufactured between 2012 and 2019.

The lawsuit alleges that the models sold during those years have a manufacturing defect that causes excessive frost to accumulate on the evaporator.

“These models can develop excessive frost buildup on the evaporator coils, which blocks airflow, impairs cooling performance, and risks spoiled food,” Dennis Godynik, lead appliance expert at Comfort Appliance Repair in Tennessee, told Home and Gardens.

The alleged frost buildup is said to affect the refrigerator’s ability to work correctly.

It is said to affect the cooling of food and can lead to more significant damage.

Some customers may need to buy a new refrigerator altogether due to the defect.

The Michigan-based manufacturer did not admit any wrongdoing but agreed to settle on an undisclosed amount.

Those who believe they may be eligible to claim should search for a serial number on the settlement website.

Once on the website, consumers should enter their model and serial number, and then upload any relevant repair documents.

After uploading the document, claimants should write a short description of the defect and submit the claim.

The website states that claims can usually be submitted without receipts; however, providing more documentation generally results in a higher payout.

The amount that class members receive depends on the age of the refrigerator at the time of the repairs.

The maximum claim that people can receive is $300 for past repairs or replacements.

    What's a class-action settlement?

Class action lawsuits offer groups of people, or 'classes,' a way to band together in court.

These suits are often brought by one or a few people who allege a company or other entity has wronged a large group of people.

When a suit becomes a class action, it extends to all “class members,” or people who may have similar complaints to those who filed the suit.

Companies often settle class actions – offering payment to class members who typically waive their right to pursue further legal action by accepting money.

These payout agreements frequently include statements by the defendant denying wrongdoing. Companies tend to settle class actions to avoid the costs of further litigation.

Pollution, discrimination, or false advertising are a few examples of what can land a class action on a company’s doorstep.

That $300 payment only applies if the refrigerator was one to three years old at the time of the repair.

If the model is over four years old, the payment becomes less.

Those with an appliance four to six years old will be paid $225, while those with a refrigerator seven to eight years old will receive $150.

On average, claimants will receive $70 each.
