Ahead of the much-awaited five-match Test series against England, Jasprit Bumrah has confirmed that he declined the BCCI’s offer to become India’s full-time Test captain following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the longest format of the game.
After this, the BCCI and the national selectors have handed the prestigious responsibility to Shubman Gill, and Bumrah has made it clear that he is fully backing the young captain. The Indian speedster has emphasized that he will always provide guidance to Gill when needed.
Bumrah said that he believes in giving young captains space to grow. The fast bowler, who led India in a couple of Test matches, reiterated that he’s always available to help Gill while hailing the young skipper’s energy and mindset, saying he should lead in his way.

Jasprit Bumrah told Dinesh Karthik on Sky Sports, “In my experience, you have to give freedom, and you have to be there for the player. I am there for him whenever he needs me, in whatever capacity. I don't want to jump in, and if I see something, I would give a quiet word.
That's how I have played cricket. I want the person to be free about how he wants to operate. He is young and energetic, and he has his thought process, and that is how it should be. If he needs anything from me, I will always be there for him.”
Notably, Jasprit said that he opted against taking India’s Test captaincy because he wanted to manage his workload, and he shared the reason with the BCCI when they were considering him for the role.

Providing insights on Gambhir’s coaching style, Bumrah said that the coach is very individualistic and talks with players individually. Instead of addressing the squad in huddles, Gambhir is connecting with players one-on-one, giving them the freedom to do things on their own while offering advice only when needed.
Bumrah further noted, “He is a person who is very individualistic. He will have one-on-one chats with the person where he feels that he is supposed to interfere. You know, when people are going in one direction and he has some thoughts about that.”
