Oprah Winfrey Names the Surprising 1963 Children’s Novel That Kick-Started Her Lifelong Love of Reading: ‘This is What Got Me Onto Books’

Few celebrities are as closely associated with reading as Oprah Winfrey.

The founder of the influential Oprah Winfrey Book Club, Winfrey herself has also been outspoken about her lifelong attachment to reading, regularly interviewing authors, writers and philosophical thinkers on her show.

As sophisticated as her taste in books grew to become, however, Winfrey’s love of reading came from an unlikely source, with her first young adult book that she read in third grade paving the way to a decades-long fascination with books that continues nearly a lifetime later.

During an appearance on Under the Cover in September, Winfrey was asked various questions about some of her personal favorite books throughout her lifetime.

When asked what was the first book she’d ever read, Winfrey promptly answered by naming the 1963 children’s novel, Honestly, Katie John!

“I remember a book called Honestly, Katie John! It was my first book with no pictures and I read it in the third grade,” Winfrey explained. “So this is what got me onto books.”

Written by Mary Calhoun and forming the third book in the four-part Katie John series, Honestly, Katie John! follows the hijinks of the titular Katie John Tucker, a fiercely independent sixth grader who grows frustrated by her classmates’ sudden infuation with boys.

Interestingly, Winfrey cited the fact that the book’s cover was what initially attracted her to reading it. Explaining that there were few books featuring Black characters in her library, Winfrey said that Katie John’s dark hair caught her eye.

“There were no books about Black girls at the time that I knew of,” the iconic TV celebrity said in the video. “But Honestly, Katie John! had a picture of a girl with dark hair on the cover. And freckles. And so the dark hair was as close as I could get.”
