WATSONVILLE — A suspect was arrested Thursday in connection with the deaths of two Watsonville men, 21-year-old Jeremiah Rios Aguilera and 21-year-old Giovanni Lopez, who were gunned down in an agricultural area near the city in October 2024.
According to a statement from the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect is an 18-year-old man from the Watsonville area and was found by detectives in the city of Sacramento with the aid of the Sacramento Police Department. Because the suspect was 17 years old when the killings occurred, the Sheriff’s Office is not releasing his name. He was booked into the Santa Cruz County Juvenile Hall Detention Facility on charges of two counts of murder.

Aguilera and Lopez were discovered on the ground with gunshot wounds and were unresponsive. According to the statement, despite life-saving efforts, both men died at the scene.
The Sheriff’s Office detectives began an in-depth investigation, which included assistance from the Sheriff’s Office Forensic Team, the Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office, the Watsonville Police Department, the Sacramento Police Department and the state Department of Justice.
In the statement, the Sheriff’s Office expressed its deepest condolences to the family of the victims.
