PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo was not expecting a second Father’s Day phone call from his oldest son, Nick, when he received it.
Nick Lovullo was supposed to be managing of the South Bend Cubs in a High-A game, but he called his dad after getting ejected in the second inning against the Fort Wayne TinCaps (Padres).
Not only that, but the young skipper took a page out of his father’s playbook.
“He said, ‘Dad, happy Father’s Day. I have a great Father’s Day present for you,'” Torey Lovullo recalled from their conversation. “I got a great call from him already this morning. I had a great text message when I woke up. I’m like, that’s enough for me. He’s like, ‘I got thrown out of the game.’
“He goes, ‘It was three bad calls by the same umpire right in a row and I had enough. So I mumbled walking away the last time and he threw me out. So I walked back out and I threw him out of the game just like you did.'”
Torey Lovullo was ejected from a game in San Francisco earlier this season, and he went viral for motioning to throw out each of the umpires.
Nick Lovullo ran out of the dugout after an umpire signaled that a ball caught in the air along the infield hit the ground. Lovullo was ejected from the game, and on his way out, he gave the umpire the same gesture.

Nick Lovullo, 31, is in his second season managing the Cubs’ affiliate, and his father is optimistic he will coach in the major leagues one day.
Torey Lovullo managed minor league teams for years before joining a big league staff. Lovullo expressed that he is a proud dad first and foremost, but their shared profession allows them to lean on each other professionally, as well. Both of their teams have gone through ups and downs this season but entered Sunday on a five-game winning streak.
“I had an hour conversation with him the day before Game 1 in St. Louis,” Torey Lovullo said. “We were three or four games over .500 starting to play good baseball. He’s struggling and he’s like, ‘I’m kinda lost.’
“I’m like, be yourself. Be who you are, be your authentic self. He has this charismatic personality. And I said just continue to be yourself. It’s genuine, authentic and that’s what’s gonna train people the best way.
“And then, you know what happened? Three days later we get swept by the Cardinals and all hell’s breaking loose here. And he’s calling me like, ‘You hanging in there man? Just be your authentic self, dad.’ I’m like, ‘You’re damn right.’ So it works both ways. He’s my son, but he’s also a colleague and we live in the same space every single day.”
