Israel and Iran exchanged strikes for the third day amid stalled U.S.-Iranian nuclear talks, according to The Associated Press.
Iran has been facing Israeli airstrikes for the past three days, with Iran’s own missiles hitting buildings in Israel and being able to make it past air defenses, the AP reported.
Earlier Sunday, explosions rocked the Iranian capital of Tehran, with blasts also reported elsewhere in the country, according to the AP. A prior Iranian death toll of 78, with over 320 wounded, was not updated, the outlet reported
Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue service reported that Iranian strikes killed a minimum of 10 people in Israel from late Saturday to Sunday, according to the AP.
Another round of U.S.-Iranian nuclear talks were scheduled in Muscat, Oman, on Sunday, but they were axed according to Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi.
“We remain committed to talks and hope the Iranians will come to the table soon,” a high-level American official told the AP.
Iranian leaders announced on Friday that their country had no longer planned to engage in nuclear talks with the U.S. that had been scheduled to take place Sunday in Oman following deadly airstrikes from Israel, which said it targeted Iranian nuclear facilities and military sites.
On Saturday, Iranian officials indicated they could reverse their decision not to attend upcoming nuclear talks. However, they said more negotiations were probably “meaningless” as they exchanged fire with Israel.
“The other side [the U.S.] acted in a way that makes dialogue meaningless. You cannot claim to negotiate and at the same time divide work by allowing the Zionist regime (Israel) to target Iran’s territory,” Esmaeil Baghaei, a spokesperson for the Iranian foreign ministry previously said.
