SAN DIEGO – San Diego Super Bloom was crowned Western Ultimate League champion on Sunday after a dramatic 12-10 victory over the Bay Area Falcons in the final.
All members of the 24-player roster got playing time during championship weekend, which saw Super Bloom go on a 5-0 run after being down early to the Falcons, helping propel them to the trophy.
“These players have bought in for the past four years without being able to take home the championship,” said co-head coach Amy Schlabach. “It’s validating as a coach to come in with a different system with different ideas than coaches in the past and to be able to win the whole thing.”

San Diego Super Bloom finished 5-1 during the regular season and played its three home games at Mission Bay High in Pacific Beach before going 2-0 in the post-season in Oakland.
“Our goal is to win back-to-back championships,” said San Diego Super Bloom board president Angela Wells. “Mission Bay High School is a great venue and we would love for more people to come out. It’s a fun sport that people don’t know much about and we want to show everyone how good these women are at Frisbee.”
Wells also served as the team’s first head coach from 2020 to 2023.
The standout player was Kaela Helton, who received her third WUL MVP award during the championships. Helton, who won MVP honors in 2022 and 2023, along with being a finalist in 2024, finished with over 1,100 receiving yards without a single receiving error this season, which was a feat unmatched by anyone else in the league.
Teammates Dena Elimelech, Rebeca Ellis, Kelli Iwamoto, Abbi Shilts, and Kaitlyn Weaver were also major contributors during the team’s championship run.
“It was a whole team win and we got to bring our whole roster up to Oakland with everyone getting to play throughout the weekend,” Schlabach added. “We just kept saying this isn’t a reward, this is a receipt for all the hard work they have put in over the years.”
San Diego Super Bloom was also led by assistant coaches Brittany Cabriales and Shar Stuht.
