BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Main Street Bridge in Brockport remains closed to traffic, causing frustration among locals. Originally scheduled to reopen in September, the delay has impacted the community significantly.
News10NBC’s Declan Stablow visited Brockport to speak with residents about their concerns and hopes for the bridge project.
“I’d like to see the bridge open tomorrow I guess. Or the next day or next week,” Patricia Kutz, a Brockport resident, said. “And something else that could happen would be some sort of financial help for the town,” said Kutz.
Kutz, who used to run the Lift Bridge Bookstore near the bridge, highlighted the support from community members as crucial for local businesses’ survival.
“That’s very nice, but it still doesn’t excuse the fact that the bridge is down,” Kutz said. “Many businesses have had to close, and small town America is what we’re all about.”
Kutz expressed frustration over the lack of communication regarding the delay’s cause.
“It’s very difficult. Very difficult to have a business, maintain a business with the bridge closed,” Kutz said. “We don’t really understand why it’s taking so long, although we get told stories.”
The New York State Department of Transportation said they have no new information to share at this time. News10NBC reached out to the contractor, Crane Hogan, for comment on the delays but has not received a response.
The state is fining Crane Hogan $7,000 a day due to the delays. current estimates from the village say the bridge will reopen at the end of June, but business owners are doubtful of that timeline.
