Brian Kelly hears all about Arch Manning, the New Orleans export who is set to take the reins at Texas. During an appearance on ESPN’s College GameDay Podcast this week, Kelly talked shop with Pete Thamel and Rece Davis, and when Thamel mentioned LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier as the top returning quarterback in his view, Manning’s name was brought up as another contender for that title.
“Look, we hear it every day. He’s from Louisiana,” Brian Kelly said with a grin. “And listen, there’s another guy that hears it all the time, too, and that’s Garrett Nussmeier. He’s committed. He’s, more than anything else, experienced. And in this league, you need to see the bullets flying. Ask Jayden Daniels when he threw for 67 yards against Auburn.”
Nussmeier is going into his second season as the full-time starter for LSU. He backed up Daniels in 2023 and, for the most part, played lights out throughout 2024. Nussmeier ended his debut season 13th nationally in Total QBR and 12th in EPA. He was also second among SEC passers in both yards and touchdowns.
Yet Manning, the first-time starter, is viewed as the early favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. He’s priced at +700 at DraftKings. Nussmeier is +900.
“All I’m saying is Nussmeier’s seen it. He knows what he’s going to get. There’s a confidence that he’ll bring to each and every game that, through experience, maybe even through some scar tissue, that is going to allow him to be the best quarterback,” Kelly said.
“Now, Manning is extremely talented, but he’s got to go do it,” Kelly said. “And there’s going to be a couple of days where it doesn’t come out the way it’s supposed to. How do you bounce back? How do you come back from that? How does it work the next week in your gameplan? So there’s a lot out there. I can see the assessment of Manning. He’s an outstanding player, but I’ll take the guy that’s been in the SEC and seen what it looks like.”
