BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Main Street Bridge in Brockport remains under construction, more than six months after its scheduled reopening in early September. Now, officials estimate the bridge won’t be completed until the end of June at the earliest.
The state is fining the contractor, Crane Hogan, $7,000 each day for the delays.
Brockport Mayor Margie Blackman said supply chain issues are partly to blame for the delay. Local businesses have been significantly impacted by the ongoing construction. Sarah Bonczyk, owner of the Lift Bridge Bookstore, said her business is down up to 50%.
“It’s been surprisingly devastating. I mean, I can’t sugarcoat it,” Bonczyk said. “I know that everyone here on Main Street has had different experiences. We can only speak for ourselves, but it’s been really hard. You know the only thing I can say to give that perspective, again, from our angle is that 2020 looks like a cakewalk with everything being shutdown compared to the bridge being closed.”
Bonczyk also expressed doubt about the current end-of-June estimate for the bridge’s reopening. She says her business wouldn’t have survived this long without support from the community.
News10NBC’s Declan Stablow reached out to Crane Hogan and the state Department of Transportation for comment but has not received a response.
