YMCA holds ribbon-cutting for new pickleball courts

City officials and YMCA leaders held a ribbon-cutting ceremony last Thursday to celebrate the opening of two new pickleball courts outside the downtown YMCA. The new ADA-accessible courts, located at 2300 13th St., include enhanced lighting and security cameras to ensure player safety.

“The YMCA of Tuscaloosa is an organization that consistently meets a standard of excellence that puts our constituents first,” Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox said. “The YMCA doesn’t deliver promises like so many; they deliver services that matter.”

In March, the University announced plans to add 10 new pickleball courts to the Student Recreation Center. The YMCA expansion increases the sport’s presence in Tuscaloosa beyond campus.

“It’s always special when an idea becomes reality, especially one that promotes fellowship and healthy lifestyles,” said Jeff Knox, CEO of the YMCA of Tuscaloosa. “We are incredibly grateful for our partnership with the City, as it allows us to impact more and more of the Tuscaloosacommunity.”

Councilor Lee Busby of District 4 praised the project.

“The team Jeff Knox has put on board has been phenomenal, and none of this would have happened without that team,” he said.
